Despite the fact that the feds have earmarked $100 million in stimulus to save public school jobs, many schools are taking major hits due to city budget. Public schools were in need of major overhauling before the recession, who knows what will happen now. It may make some parents consider if homeschooling is a better option, especially if one parent has recently lost their job.
Happy EARTH Day!!!
April 22nd is EARTH Day and we're spending most of the day watching movies of the Earth and hold discussions of what we seen on the videos and how we as individuals can help keep our Earth healthy and happy. So Happy EARTH Day and show the Earth some love as well!
New Material
Yes Spring Break was over on Monday and we've been very busy this week. I've been trying to come up with different ways to teach (I was told we would receive some assistance with learning items & you can guess that's not happening). I placed an order for some supplies from teachchildren.com and amazon.com a couple days ago. I'm excited of course. We use the online computer program from Time4Learning.com (it's a sister system to Compass Learning) for Math, Reading, Science, History and some miscellaneous subjects like Geography. We use the White Board and workbooks for Handwriting. Right now we're being creative by surfing the internet for ideas for Spanish (123teachme.com/ learn_spanish/ spanish_for_children) and Health (kidshealth.org). As far as P.E. we workout to 'Walk Aerobics For Kids' with Leslie Sansone, workout on fitness balls and dance to music. He had a playdate twice this week with his buddy and we created a life skills script we read for communications. This week went well and I'm looking forward to my shipment so we can start on new material.

How to get kids to wash hands
A SheKnows how-to guide
Getting your kids to regularly wash their hands can seem like a never-ending chore, but it's something that will benefit the whole family. The basic rules are to wash hands before preparing or eating food, after coughing, sneezing, blowing your nose and after using the bathroom. Here are some tips to help encourage your children to wash their hands!
Step 1: Smart soap
Get them their favorite soap -- many kids like the ease and tactile sensation of liquid and foam soaps, and some also smell great -- to encourage them to wash well. Step 2: "Happy washday"
Teach them to wash by rubbing with soap under running water for 15-20 seconds. This is about as long as it takes to sing "Happy Birthday" twice.Step 3: The towel test
Leave out a white hand towel for them to use to dry their hands. If dirt shows up on the towel, they're not washing their hands properly.Step 4: The inkblot test
Check out a product like SquidSoap, which works by putting an ink stamp on the hand pushing down the pump to dispense the soap. The goal: Wash off the stamp. For a cheap at-home version, use a non-permanent pen to draw some little squggles on their hands, then tell them they need to wash off all of the ink.Step 5: Timed soap
Try something like Inspector Hector Dirt Detector color-changing soap. The liquid contains beads that burst when the product is used, making the soap suds change color after 15-20 seconds of handwashing. The idea is that when the color appears, hands should be clean and ready to rinse.Step 6: Doing it right
Washing your hands doesn't just mean rubbing your palms and fingertips: you need to wash between your fingers, around and under any rings, under and around your nails, and even up your wrists.Step 7: The rubdown
Every week (at least), wash down bathroom surfaces -- such as handles and knobs and the toilet seat -- with an antiseptic wipe.Step 8: Proof of concept
Maybe your kids need to understand why handwashing is so important, so explain the basics: Germs get on your hands from everything you touch, and everything you touch gets germs from your hands. The simple task of washing hands has saved millions of lives and kept people from getting illnesses and infections.Step 9: Give 'em a wipe
For times when soap and water aren't available, give your kids individually-wrapped disinfectant hand wipes or a small bottle of hand sanitizer to use.Spring Break!
Yes it's Spring Break for the public school kids. That includes my older son Josh. So this week we didn't do much except Reading and we stayed on our schedule as far sleep, grooming and meals. The rest of the day he played or did things on the computer. We will resume homeschooling on Monday April 5th. See you than.
We're Back!
Yes we're back at it again. It's March 22nd 2010 and I have had about all I can take from the school system that one can take. All I will say in this post is 'Unprofessional' behavior from grown folks- WOW. Shame on you and you know who you are. Don't except the higher pay check if you don't want to do the work that comes with the challenge, Sweetie(s)! And the other Professionals who finally contacted me after months of calling you and denying my child what he needed, thank you. Thanks for helping us to do what's best for our child and trying to give us what we asked for 5 months ago the minute you heard 'Home School' and allowing my son to suffer with folks who didn't haven't a clue pointing fingers at each other or claimed that they just didn't know what was happening. Well that's over now, and it's time to unschool and start to homeschool. It may seem like I'm angry, yeah I was. Now- not so much like before but knowing my child went through something, I won't forget. I am so grateful to be able to homeschool and be with my kids and I give Thanks to the awesome people who looked out and helped us get to this point~ "smooches".
